Bearcity

This is the gayest movie I've ever seen.

No seriously, and I dont mean it derogatorily.

For those that don't know, Netflix has a section called "Gay and Lesbian movies." Often Netflix's artificial movie brain suggests things to me from this category since I've watched documentaries and musicals about the issues of the Takei's in our country.  And I enjoyed most of them.  But usually, the movies in this category are indie...and awful.  I'm not a huge indie movie guy already because I don't have time to filter through and find the "diamonds in the rough."

Well the other night, me and the girl were really bored and she said the words "I want to watch something gay."  We fully succeeded.

The basic premises is this younger/cub-ish guy named Ty is just entering the bear culture. He's still embarassed by it and hasn't even told his queen of a roommate yet.  He spends his nights jerking off to bear porn.  He finally decides to go out to the local bear bar and meets some new friends.  He quickly ingratiates himself into this group.  From then on, we just get several relationship stories trying to make it set against the backdrop of the big bear festival of the year "Bearcity."  It was curious to me they needed to have a festival because they had Bear everything already.  Bars, bowling alleys, coffee shops, and thats just what we saw.  Are there Bear book stores? Strip Clubs?  Movie theaters?  I'm officially intrigued what city this supposed to be in (I'm guessing NYC because...indie).

It's not the best story ever, but the actors sell it well and nobody feels like "oh god he's doing an indie movie because he sucks."  A few even have been in other stuff (mostly guest spots on SVU) but they all feel like "I should know them from somewhere."  Im not sure if that was due to in the storyline most were a very specific archetype or if it's they cast very familiar looking people.  It has some pretty funny moments and if nothing else will amuse you as the large hairy men occasionally get catty at each other.

Fair warning, as should be expected: tons of male nudity and awkward sex.  But even that feels authentic.  Anyone of sex having ability knows its never as easy as the porn makes it out to be.  A lot of the movie almost feels like a gay fan fiction or softcore porn written badly on the internet.  But that's almost part of the charm as the movie approaches the situations like a fantasy, then shows you the socially paralyzing weirdness of it all.  Oh and by the way, if the content of the movie is going to bother you, what the fuck are you doing on my blog in the first place? Go read Fox News.

So that's all I got.  If you're looking for something a little different, watch Bearcity.  I'd love to hear some opinions on it: if i'm just a naive straight guy who missed something.  Or if this movie is completely just playing on stereotypes and is offensive.  Let me know!

Oh did I mention there's a sequel and Kevin Smith is in it?

Knows what my girlfriend wants to watch next...
