Yeah lets just jump in
So me and the girl are still in that alternating movies the other haven't seen game. Despite my girl being a die hard Buffy fan and loving Giles (especially in Once More with Feeling, the musical episode), she had never heard of one of my favorites of the past few years. So this game of ours has a triggered a new ongoing blog feature: Oz Re-Watch. Basically, I'll comment on something I'm watching again, and whether it held up or not. We've all seen a movie in the theatres, thoroughly enjoyed it, purchased or watched it again and gone "Why was I so in love with that?" This series will see what stands the test of limited time.
I heard about this a few years ago as a few short film-esque trailers started popping up on the internet. Once I saw the trailer with Zydrate Anatomy I was hooked. Despite there being Paris Hilton, and an obvious horror influence (since the producers were the guys from Saw. Let me add, I hate horror movies and avoid the snuff porn like the plague), the music had a distinct industrial rock vibe I've been in love with since listening to Nine Inch Nails in college. The style seemed like dystopian scifi (one of my favorites). Anthony Head is the only person I accept as able to play Frank in Rocky Horror outside of Tim Curry. There was so much going for this in its favor, so I decided to risk it when it came out on DVD.
Having no idea what we were in for, we flipped on one of the things I've enjoyed most in the past few years. It had gore, it had humor, it had genuinely talented singing. The setting, sets, costumes, all wow-ed me. I'm not an audio nerd (I'm looking at you Satyr and Pastor. For those interested check out the-bunker.net and their podcast) so I dont know about the mixing but the whole thing sounded pretty good to me, even the opera bits I expected to hate. I loved it (despite my friends being meh on it. What can I say? They're not as twisted as me).
So its been a little while since I've watched it (at least 8 months) due to some personal attachments and things, but the time had come to watch it again.
I still love this shit guys.
There's just something about this movie that draws me in every time. I've seen it dozens of times and listened to the soundtrack more and somehow it almost never gets old. The pay off moments, the twistedness, the balance of rock, industrial, opera, goth influences all make me feel as if the world's culture in the movie is just that fucked, but I still want to be a part of it. Its wonderful. It held up and might even be getting better the more times I see it and catch little nuances I didn't see before in the background.
If you're still holding out on seeing this, get your shit together and check it out. I'm not saying you'll love it like I did, but its at least an interesting piece of an attempt at something different. You may say "Hot Topic fake counterculture selling to the highest bidder" and you may not be wrong. But you know what? Fuck you. You can just enjoy some mainstream things sometimes, it doesn't make you less punk.
Repo Man took my legs long ago,
